Which Fluke Multimeter to Buy? A Purchasing Story About Discounts and Delivery Dates
On a Tuesday morning in April 2024, our owner walked into my office. “We just signed the large facility contract,” he said. “Twelve new techs. They start June 1.”
I manage purchasing for an electrical and HVAC service company. Around 90 employees, roughly three hundred thousand dollars a year in operational spend, most of it crossing my desk at some point. I am not an electrician—I’m the person who buys for electricians, HVAC techs, and facilities crews. When our lead technician Dave handed me the starter tool list, it began with “Fluke multimeters.”

Our commercial electricians use the Fluke 117. It’s an electrician’s workhorse multimeter. Voltage, current, resistance, continuity, plus built-in non-contact voltage detection for verifying a circuit is dead before opening it. Most of the new electricians got that one.
The three senior industrial techs asked for the Fluke 87V. It handles harsher environments and electrical noise better, which matters when you’re troubleshooting motor drives and plant equipment. It also costs more than double the 117, so we bought three and had a budget conversation about why.
Then the HVAC foreman pulled me aside. “Half these techs won’t use a standard meter for what they do,” she said. “They need a clamp meter.”
She showed me her Fluke 323 and explained the difference in plain terms: a regular meter has to be connected in series with the circuit to measure current. A clamp meter just clamps around the conductor. If your techs are working on live equipment and need a quick current reading without interrupting anything, the clamp wins. If your crew asks for both, they are not the same thing. Air flow meters measure air moving through ductwork; ultrasonic flow meters measure liquid moving through a pipe.
Every tech also got a Fluke 1AC II VoltAlert non-contact voltage tester. These little pens cost a fraction of a full meter and do one useful job: they indicate whether a wire is live. Our crews won’t open an electrical panel without doing that check first. We ordered a dozen because we knew they’d get lost and borrowed. That part was easy.
The 15% Discount That Didn’t Work Out
In mid-May, our finalized equipment order came to just under $9,000.
Our usual authorized Fluke distributor quoted list price. A newer online supplier came in about 15% lower. That’s $1,350 I could hand back to the owner. I checked their website, read reviews, confirmed they were a real business. Everything looked fine.
So I placed the order with the discount vendor.
Now here’s the sentence I want every purchasing person to read twice: I never asked for a delivery date I could count on. The product page said “ships within one business day,” and that was enough for me.
One business day came and went. Then “probably early next week.” Then “should be anytime now.”
About five days before the new techs started, my 87Vs and 323s existed only as an order confirmation. Dave asked me where the meters were. I said “on the way.” He said, “On the way isn’t a date.”
The same week, our senior HVAC tech lost his 1AC II. Losing a $20 voltage tester sounds minor unless the person who works on live panels won’t start the job without it. I called the discount vendor, hoping they could get a replacement to us quickly.
They offered free shipping. Via USPS.
USPS is fine for plenty of things. As of January 2025, a First-Class letter costs $0.73 (usps.com/stamps), and I’ve never had a problem mailing paperwork. But “free shipping, 3–5 days” is not “in my hand tomorrow morning.” Not for a safety check that costs more in downtime than in dollars.
I ordered replacements from an authorized distributor and paid for expedited delivery. The shipping cost more than the tester. It was worth it.
For the big order, the math was similar but the stakes were higher.
What the Delay Actually Cost
On May 29, I canceled what I could from the online vendor and reordered the essential meters from an authorized Fluke distributor.
“When can you deliver?” I asked.
“Tomorrow morning.”
They were right.
The discount order showed up about a week after the techs started. I’d canceled what I could, but some of it was already in transit. I kept a couple of pieces as spares and returned the rest. I paid roughly $400 more for the meters that arrived on time. That’s real money.
But the techs started June 3 with the right tools in their bags. If they had sat in the shop for a week waiting on “probably,” payroll alone would have swallowed more than $400. If the contract start date slipped? I don’t have hard numbers on that penalty, but I’d rather not find out.
To be fair to the discount vendor, I don’t think they set out to mislead me. I think they believed their supplier. But their belief wasn’t my delivery date.
You’re never paying extra for speed alone. You’re paying for certainty—and certainty is what a start date is actually made of.

- Fluke 1AC II VoltAlert non-contact voltage tester — not a meter. A safety tool. Buy several.
Model numbers are the easy part. The harder lesson is about how you buy them.
Match your supplier to your deadline. If you need gear next month, comparison-shop all day. If you need gear before a scheduled job, pay for a source whose delivery date means something. For us, that’s an authorized Fluke distributor. It isn’t because discount sellers are “bad.” It’s because “probably” is not a promise.
Per FTC advertising guidelines, businesses need to keep their claims truthful and not misleading (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing). I’m not accusing anyone of crossing that line. I’m just saying a price quote is not a schedule. Unless a vendor gives you a date, you don’t have one.
It took me three years in this role and one very expensive June to learn that difference. Now I’d rather explain to accounting why I spent $400 extra than explain to the owner why twelve techs were sitting in the parking lot.
The online order did eventually arrive. With a note that said “Sorry for the delay.”
